WHAT?

Natralock™ is a tear-resistant packaging structure – combining paperboard (a renewable resource) and an APET “bubble” or “blister pack” that holds the product. Simply put, it is a pain to steal and a pleasure to open. (Once a consumer gets home with a purchase, all it takes to safely “set it free” is a pair of standard kitchen scissors – as opposed to the teeth ripping, foot stomping, knife stabbing, loud screaming required to get into a plastic clamshell.)

WHY?

It had to happen. There are just too many negatives surrounding plastic clamshells. Consumers find them impossible (even dangerous) to open. Retailers find them good for only one thing – theft prevention. And, as you know, they are regularly finding their way onto the radar screens of environmentalists. Natralock is the positive alternative that checks out in every way.

Environmental Note: Natralock is more recyclable than clamshells because its predominant component, the paperboard card, is made from trees, a renewable resource that MeadWestvaco carefully stewards from harvest to replanting of the next forest. Once a consumer opens a Natralock package, he or she simply has to remove the APET “bubble” or “blister pack” to recycle the card. We realize the APET isn’t easily recyclable, but be assured we are committed to finding a recoverable alternative.

WHO?

Any product that goes to market in a plastic clamshell can go to market in a Natralock Blister Pack. Here is just a sample chart of who will benefit from the switch.

HOW?

To create Natralock – and tailor it to meet a customer’s specific needs – MeadWestvaco runs its unbleached kraft paperboard Coated Natural Kraft^® (CNK^®) or Printkote^® bleached kraft paperboard (SBS) through a patented coating process which applies a heat-seal material, as well as an optional, more tear-resistant material for high dollar value applications. Graphics are then printed on the highly receptive clay coated surface. These graphics, taking advantage of more surface area (versus traditional clamshells), have a billboard effect that greatly enhances point-of-purchase impact.
